I will no longer be doing any development of Window-only software. I’m making it official today, though it’s actually been several months since I’ve done any work on Windows applications. I will continue to develop cross-platform applications, with an emphasis on web applications. My focus has now shifted to Ruby on Rails as the platform of choice, but I will continue to use PHP (or Perl or Python) where appropriate.

This means that there will be no future versions of Ged2Csv, though I will continue to sell and support the latest version for the foreseeable future.

Can Software Have Opinions? I agree with David on this. I think that it can and should. But even so, it would be even better if you could override any functionality you don’t like. This is one of the many things that makes Ruby on Rails resonate with so many people.

This “convention over configurationâ€?, as David calls it, is what inspired me to recently re-factor Retrospect-GDS so that any functionality can be easily overridden in a template module. For something as complex as genealogy software this reduces the number of configuration options, which 99% of people don’t change, from several hundred to just a little over a dozen.

I’ve been reading/listening to the stuff on the BBC’s Voices 2005 page tonight. I’ve always enjoyed listening to/figuring out all the different regional dialects from the British Isles. I’m not sure why the U.S. doesn’t have the variety of dialects like the British Isles, but its too bad that we don’t, because I think we’re missing out on something.

I should have brought my wide-angle lens with me to NY, but alas, I did not. Due to narrowness of the streets in relationship to the hugeness of everything else it was really hard to get good pictures. So, I present this tiny photo album for your amusement.
