Lots of stuff to catch up on, so I’ll skip the niceties.
- The changes in the Rails subversion repository have been coming fast and furious for the last couple of days. I usually like running on the edge, but today I had to stay locked to a previous version (3725) in order to keep working. Is this the final push to 1.1?
- I ordered my new MacBook Pro yesterday. Dual core, 2GB of RAM, and the 100GB 7200rpm drive. Feel it.
- Why the lucky stiff’s spectacular example of mentat logic has been integrated into Rails. I’m using it to do full renders in the new RJS templates:
p = Proc.new { render_as_string :template => "/users/details" }; page.replace_html "user_details", p.bind(@controller).call - Last thursday I decided to try a vegatarian diet for 30 days. If it works out, I’ll stick with it for a while longer. If I don’t like it I’ll switch back. Tomorrow will be a full week and I’m very surprised that it’s been so easy to switch. I’ve considered making the switch for several months now, but always thought that I’d have a really hard time find things to eat. Not so, and I’ve actually lost 6 pounds this week to boot. This is very surprising because I’ve been unable to lose more than 2 pounds for over a year now, no matter what I’ve tried. I’m at 224 lbs today. My goal is 200 and then I’ll re-evaluate.
- I’m no longer training for the San Diego marathon. I’m just not going to be able to make it at the pace my training is progressing. I’m still running 4 days a week and am planning on running the Portland Marathon in October.
- Did I mention that I’ll be in Chicago for RailsConf 2006 in June?
- I’ll also be at OSCON again this year, but probably only for the one day Ruby track. It’s too damn expensive to go for the whole thing.

Congrats on all that stuff…and smart move on not rushing the marathon stuff. 16 weeks to prepare can be a bit tight. Happy belated bday as well mate.
I see a new indie mocumentary forming; 30 days of vegetarianism. I got a decent little sony digcam we can use.
How is that going for you anyway? I know I wouldn’t be able to have that kind of will power. Something inside me just makes me crave red meat.
PS: I gave you some adsense pennies by clicking on the links. Just another way I help my friends get rich. :-)
I’ve been doing the veg thing for about 2.5 weeks now and its been really easy. Much easier than I thought it would be. I’m actually enjoying it and I’ve lost 11 pounds so far!
You’re loosing weight because your muscles are atrophying due to the lack of iron and other minerals in meat. :P
So are you going veggie-only or some combination, such as veggie-chicken or veggie-seafood?
I have a few friends who are veggies, but I can’t even imagine what I would eat that would be good and satisfy my appetite - give me some examples of what you’re eating for meals.
My main goal is to lose weight and get healthier so I’m eating eggs and fish but am limiting both to no more than twice per week.
Today for breakfast I had a Yoplait non-fat yogurt and a banana. I usually have a second fruit like an apple between breakfast and lunch but I wan’t very hungry this morning so I skipped it.
For lunch I had a Gardenburger lasanga. It was awesome, very filling and only 5 grams of fat. Since I’m trying to stay away from eating out so much I’m usually having some sort of frozen vegetarian meal. Lots of good choices at Fred Meyers or Wild Oats etc. I’m sticking with the lower fat ones for now…
Afternoon snack was half a pita and some chipotle hummus. Usually I have fruit instead, but I went to Wild Oats and the hummus was calling me ;-)
Dinner today was a tomato salad that I made with two nice vine ripened tomatos (quartered), 8 croutons, 4 olive, Newman’s vinagrette dressing and about a half cup of cottage cheese. On the side I had 5 vegatable crackers and 1 oz of Laughing Cow light herb cheese.
The salad was surprisingly filling. I chose to eat a salad because I thought I wouldn’t be too full to go running, but I’m gonna have to wait a bit now cuz I’m too full.
During the first week my dinners usually consisted of some sort of meat substitute like fake chicken patties or boca burgers, but I’ve found that many of the vegetable loafs, like okra patties, etc are really good too.
Okra patties? Weird… The Soy Dogs are decent though, and surprisingly taste almost like a cheap hot dog.
The Gardenburger lasagna sounds decent though, and a clever idea. I never thought about using gardenburger stuff in other items as a meat substitute.
Salads are an awesome way to lose weight. Last summer, I started my own salad diet. I could eat anything I wanted as long as it was on top of a salad. (And no, not like a t-bone on top of a salad.) I would eat salad for lunch and dinner. Happy hour was exception to the rule and I would just be a bit more selective than I am normally in what I choose to eat. I lost 6 lbs in a month by just doing that, and nothing else different.
Since you’re still eating some fish, you should check out some of the recipes on our Seafood Blog: http://www.seafoodblog.org - I know it’s kind of a dumb site but many of the recipes that come in via RSS feed sound pretty good.
Anyway, congrats on your success so far.
