It’s a slow Friday, so it’s time for another music update. According to iTunes, my top 10 songs are:

  1. Where Is Your Heart from the album “Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson
  2. Mysterons from the album “Dummy by Portishead
  3. Glory Box from the album “Dummy by Portishead
  4. Walking With a Ghost from the album “So Jealous by Tegan and Sara
  5. Roads from the album “Dummy by Portishead
  6. Since U Been Gone from the album “Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson
  7. Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own from the album “The Complete U2 - How to Dismantle an Atomic Bombâ€? by U2
  8. Lebanese Blonde from the album “The Mirror Conspiracy by Thievery Corporation
  9. Sour Times from the album “Dummy by Portishead
  10. Island in the Sun from the album “Weezer by Weezer

It’s funny to see how my music listening habits change over time. Late last year was almost totally electronic music. Early this year was all cheesy pop songs. Right now there’s a little of everything…

The music I’ve been listening to the last few days is quite different than what I’ve been listening to for the last few months. This is more mellow stuff, befitting of my more mellow mood. It’s a mixture of old favorites and brand new stuff.

A random selection In no particular order:

  • When I’m Thinking About You from the album “Static & Silenceâ€? by The Sundays
  • The entire album “Dummyâ€? by Portishead
  • Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own from the album “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bombâ€? by U2
  • New Slang from the album “Oh, Inverted Worldâ€? by The Shins
  • Lebanese Blonde from the album “The Mirror Conspiracyâ€? by Thievery Corporation
  • Waves from the album “SXSW 2005 Showcasing Artistâ€? by Mono Band
  • L’Accord Parfait from the album “Autour De Lucieâ€? by Autour De Lucie

So, I guess after purchasing yet another Kelly Clarkson song in iTunes today, I should just give up the charade and admit that I’m a sappy pop music listening dope. What’s my new Kelly Clarkson song of choice? “Where Is Your Heartâ€?. I may as well just buy the whole album. I’ll probably end up with the whole thing eventually anyway.

I’ve never been shy about saying that The Cranberries are my favorite band of all time. I own every album, single, special bonus edition, and bootleg CD that I could get my hands on. So it should be no surprise that I’m excited by the news that Noel Hogan recently formed a new band called Mono Band.

Today I downloaded the first single from Mono Band called “Waves” from the SXSW festival site. If the the rest of the album is anything like the single, I think I’ll enjoy the new album immensely.

After reading Kottke’s Earworm post about Since U Been Gone I fired up Rhapsody (I hate iTunes) and opened up the Most Popular Tracks by Kelly Clarkson page. Since U Been Gone was the most popular, but I didn’t find myself compelled to listen to it more than a couple of times. Wanting to keep moving, I started playing the others in the list. The third song was Because of You. I don’t know what any of the other songs are like because I’ve had Because of You on repeat for the last 6 hours. This is Because of You, Kottke. Damn you.
